I don’t know if anyone is ever going to find this, or if you’ll ever get this signal. We returned to P.E.R.N. but by the time we got here we were too late to help them. We didn’t know the dangers. Our rescue failed. We weren’t prepared for them.
I only wish this message gets to you before you return. There is no more hope for us.

That message never reached anyone…
Years ago, people returned to Pern to answer a distress beacon that they had received. A crew of 38 was sent out on the ship Yokono, and no one ever came back. They never heard anything other than that they had arrived.
Years later, someone with deep pockets wanted to know the truth. Two ships went out. After years of deep sleep and flying on autopilot, they chose the last known location of the Yokono as their landing pad. What their computer screen showed them was a land of ice and snow, and the ghostly remains of a sealed ship.
And it is time for them to make their first trip down to Pern.
