Four hundred Turns ago a comet hit the Red Star.
There was mass hysteria.
As Pern panicked, factions broke off that differed from simple Weyr and Hold groups. The first was the Followers of AIVAS, claiming they followed the ideals that the computer had set forth. It claimed that the dragons were evil. That they needed to be eradicated. Pern would not be at peace until dragonkin was gone completely. The group presented onloy two choices: join them, or be against them. Families were torn apart as brother turned on brother, rider against Weyrfolk, against Holder.
Turns later more groups split, no longer happy with the radical ideas of either group. The Kingdom of Shindrar tore Benden Weyr apart. It killed and murdered dragon and human alike and proclaimed a war that the Followers were too peaceful to start. Any dragon, rider or supporter of dragonkin that entered their land, they said, would be culled on sight.
Over half of Pern agreed that dragons had outlived their use.
Earth, though, had not finished with their explorations of Pern. 2oo Turns ago Japan sent a colony called the Nihonjin to Pern. They crash landed, starting their own faction on the Eastern Isles and embracing ancient traditions the technology of Earth hadn't allowed them to. But they stayed isolated. Curious, but separate from the rest of Pern, only the few venturing to the other continents to seek another life.
And the dragons thrived. Candidates dwindling and war on their borders, they set up Weyrs in places were people were peaceful - or at least not radicals. They were sheltered in some places, Holds still supporting them, and a mixture of a limited gene pool, the outside pressure of war and suffering, and effects from the comet strike caused new colours to emerge. The new clutchering females were as much a blessing as a mystery, ensuring that even with limited Golds, the Emeralds and other new colours could pick up the slack.
With riders' blessing Britine Revolutionaries took hold of parts of Pern. They brought in old customs, old American customs from the old Earth - or at least, that's what they looked like. They championed dragons and their riders and provided shelter where there was previously none. For the Weyrs things started to look up. They had people willing to fight for them, and places for candidates to be Searched without risking lives. Sixty Turns has seen the Revolutionaries make such a difference and so much change.
---------
Dendrary Weyr exists on the Western Continent. A completely neutral Weyr that accepts anyone from any faction - Revolutionaries, Followers and Shindrar members disenchanted with the way the group has turned out, or a curious Nihonjin looking for a new life on Pern. All they have to do is accept the dragons and their kin and work hard to ensure everyone can survive.
Will you be part of the Weyr’s attempt at peace and openness, or will you try to bring chaos to a world already chaotic? The choice is up to you.
